NEW POLICE CALIBRES AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF SMART WEAPONS FOR THE POLICE SERVICES (NL)

Due to the terror attacks in Europe and the increased terror threat in our country, it has been mentioned several times that it would be advisable to better arm the police. The choice for the 9 mm Luger weapon has not fundamentally been questioned, since the operation-effect ratio of this gun is very well-balanced.  Still, new calibres are being focussed on, including 30, .300 Magnum, .300 Blackout, .300 Whisper and.338. Whether or not the weapons with these new calibres will succeed in replacing this 9 mm Luger will be based upon the weapon’s minimal recoil, the reliability of its operation and an easy maintenance and repair. The new weapons will also have to be lighter, smaller, safer, customisable and less-than-lethal.
Finally, it can also be assumed that the police services will dispose of intelligent weapon systems within the foreseeable future, which only function with fingerprints for example and which can be switched off electronically from a distance.

Speaker:
* Mr Christoph Dhont - investigator at the weapons department of the federal police
