Police tasks within the framework of emergency planning:
Establishing perimeters: Securing the affected area by setting up an exclusion perimeter (accessible only to emergency services) and a deterrence perimeter to keep bystanders at a distance.
Management of traffic flows: Keeping access routes clear for other emergency services (such as fire brigades and ambulances) and setting up a designated parking area for emergency service vehicles.
Maintenance of public order: Preventing theft or disturbances in the affected area.
Support during evacuations: Physically evacuating buildings or neighbourhoods and guiding people to safe zones or reception centres.
Judicial investigation: If necessary, securing evidence for the later investigation into the cause of the emergency situation.
Victim identification: In incidents involving fatalities, the police (often through the DVI – Disaster Victim Identification unit) work on identifying the victims.
Cooperation with supporting units: drones, helicopters, search dogs, etc.
